I have been corresponding with Victor N. Alexander, a native Aramaic speaker who has translated much of the Old Testament and all of the New Testament from the ancient Aramaic text. His idiomatic translation with many, many footnotes is quite unique. The insights I get from his translations and notes floor me. He had a web page up for a long time, v-a.com, but had to let it go when Satan attacked him with leukemia. The chemo therapy, which most of us knew nothing about, was very detrimental and disruptive to his mental faculties, and financially ruinous. Vic is not an endowed institution; he's just a guy who knows the ancient Aramaic of the Church of the East very, very well. And if you do not yet have his translated books (I find the individual books much easier to handle, but I have the combined volumes also), I think you are missing out on an awful lot (his notes will revise your understanding of what you've got).
Well, Vic would like to get v-a.com back online, probably as aramaic-bible.com. And he feels inspired to try to translate the rest of the Torah and the other books of the Old Testament. But he needs funding. If you have been blessed by his insightful translations and notes of the ancient Aramaic, the language the ancients actually lived and spoke in, and the perspective of the Eastern Church, and would like access to his digital books of the Scriptures, please consider sending Vic a donation. I can't promise anything, and no, it won't be tax deductible (at least I don't think so), but just maybe Vic and his wife Liv can get his website hosted to where all the Church can benefit from it. Vic's present mailing address is:
1129 Linden Avenue #2
Glendale, CA 91201
Vic's birthday is May 7th. He is 83 years old now, so cut him some slack. His email address is vicalexander37@gmail.com. Here is the latest I have from him:
Hi Dan,
Today, I decided to start translating the next three books of the Old Testament. I had translated Genesis and Exodus only. Today, I started translating Leviticus. Everyday I will translate in the morning when I'm sharp. As you know I can read the Ancient Aramaic right off the pages of the Church of the East Old Testament. I can read and write modern Assyrian also.
In a few days, I'll get my new PayPal card. With it I can buy aramaic-bible.com and there I will start posting my translations of Leviticus and the rest of the other two books of the Old Testament. Then there are a few more books of the last twelve books of the Old Testament, and eventually I'll have translated the who Church of the East Ancient Aramaic Bible, with scholarly footnotes at the end of each chapter.
As it is, my translation of the Church of the East New Testament with scholarly footnotes at the end of each chapter is unique. No other translation in the English language has these so many (sic) notes.
Of course, I'll probably never finish the entire Old Testament, because the Old Testament is a lot bigger than the New Testament. It might take me another five or even ten years to complete the Old Testament translation. But I must try anyways.
Thanks for writing.
With the blessings of Maran Eashoa Msheekha,
Victor N. Alexander
Previous to that:
Hi Dan,
Thanks again. I saw Hostinger's offer. At first it's less money, then it's like all others -- especially a major Bible website like v-a.com/Bible/ I not only had all the New Testament, but also ten books of the Old Testament which are essential to the understanding of Christianity.
As you probably know, the first five books of the Bible are the Torah of Judaism, or the five books of Moses -- which I'm not really interested in as such. However I have translated them anyway. And they have as much to do about Christianity as they do about Moses.
Also, I have other subjects under v-a.com -- for example, alcohol addiction, etc. I can get an American Express card myself -- and I might do it in a few months anyways. But I prefer not to use it for my Bible pages online.
Hostinger is a pretty good hosting website, as for the domain, of course, it's very expensive, because v-a.com is a very large domain. So if you want to contribute some money toward my new Bible page on the Internet, you can simply send me a check or money order, and I'll use it to get my Church of the East New Testament and the ten books of the Church of the East Old Testament on a new Bible website -- Victor Alexander's Bible from the original language it was recorded in, with scholarly footnotes. I'll abbreviate it of course. So it will be a one time expense for you. Think about it, and if it's something you want to do, let me know.
With blessings of Marran Eashoa Msheekha as always,
Victor N. Alexander
If you have been blessed by Victor's work, or would just be willing to help him out for Jesus' sake, please consider supporting his work financially and with a lot of PRAYERS.
